2 Weeks Down!

Today was my second weigh in! I lost 1.6 pounds and I'm so satisfied bc it is not a good time of month for me to be weighing...ladies, I'm sure you feel me! Plus, I feel really adjusted after 2 weeks, and am going to start getting back to the gym- I'm pumped!!! I visited some friends in Belton for the 4th of July wknd, and there was so much yummy food around, and I was surprisingly satisfied with my program. Sometime during the weekend I realized, any other holiday weekend with so many amazing food options, I would have been stuffed the entire weekend!!! (and when its hot out, and your on the lake in a bathing suit, it just feels so much more enjoyable to have refreshing snacks throughout the day). I know this isn't really a fast, and it definitely can't be considered a spiritual fast, but much like a fast, it really takes the focus off food and allowed me to enjoy more important things this weekend (like awesome friends and the beautiful surroundings!). I think this program could really help with my emotional attachment and just down right addiction to food, AND....I think I'm going to do it 3 additional weeks (so far!). I was only planning on doing 5 when I started, but its going really well, and my mom is starting it next week, so I think I'll do it all the way through her first order (5 wks) and we'll see from there! (I think I could possibly be at my ultimate, never thought I would reach goal by then, CRAZY!!!)

DISCLAIMER

I was just reading up on the Take Shape For Life website (thats the name of the company, and I'm doig the "Medifast program"), and turns out exercise is a BIG part of their ongoing program (like any healthy lifestyle), its just the first couple weeks that you are supposed to seriously cut back (so you can adjust to the smaller portions). So, I'll be back movin and shakin again soon!:)

Also, since some friends of mine are doing the program now too, I should prepare you- its no cake walk (bad choice of words :/) the first few days. Adjusting to the program is rough for the first week, especially the first couple days! But its helps that everyone else whose done it experienced the same thing, and like their body did, your body will adjust and start burning fat for energy, and your success will be VERY ENCOURAGING!!!!! If you're trying it, stay strong for a bit, and sorry if I was too excited by my weigh in to tell you my tummy grumbled for days! :) ...all better now though, and I'll keep you updated.

So long set point!

I have struggled with staying healthy and maintaining a healthy weight for a long time..well forever I guess! And have had a very volatile relationship with food. Over the past several months though (at the end of a LONG weightloss journey that started with me being very overweight), I have been at a healthy weight that made me happy, and a set point that my body maintained even through fluctuations in exercise and eating habits (although I definitely had to up the exercise sometimes to make up for extended periods that I declared "special occasions" and "free days" hehe).

In that time I even trained for and completed 2 half marathons and a marathon, and maintained my set point (between 148-152...kind of a wide range bc I take exessive time off btwn my spurts of heavy exercise, and take full advantage of holidays...I really enjoy food, and don't always enjoy hardcore workouts!)

That being said, in my experience exercise and old fashioned healthy eating can help you get healthy over time, and after a while, will help you maintain a set point (a weight where your body gets comfortable and kind of camps out, even when you are still working hard). HOWEVER, I am thinking that if you want to see progress when your body is camped out at a set point, you might have to do something intense to get you going! So basically, I am happy that by the charts I am at a "healthy weight" but I am pretty excited to see what the posibilities could be! The idea that I could be a healthy person that people would also see as "fit" and "thin", kinda blows my mind! But if Medifast could get me there, why not see! (and so far, I'm feeling that it CAN! whoo!!!)

We all have different body image, and health goals. Lots that we've discarded as unrealistic and unattainable, but you never know until you try. So I'm taking my out of the trash bin and going for it!

First Weigh In!!!

I lost 5.6 pounds the first week! I was incredibly excited when I got my results this morning, but I tried to contain my enthusiasm until I weighed about ten more times...just to make sure it was correct!!! I feel like things are right on track as far as what I've read and my health coach has told me to expect. My body should now be using stored fat for energy, and I believe that because the fatigue is pretty much gone! I feel energized! And I feel adjusted to the small snacks every couple hours as well. Granted, I want this to be a totally honest blog about my experience, the good and the bad aspects...but right now I am SO PUMPED and satisfied!!!! The program is definitely strict, but I like that, because the more options I have or "add-ons," the more I take advantage and end up adding lots of extra calories. And the food has been GOOD (not great..but good!...but this is also coming from a person that is used to diety food and protein powder), ehhh, no. I just had my maple brown sugar oatmeal and it was just plain good, whether you like diet food or not!

Anywho, if anyone ever has any questions about MediFast, let me know! (missktmurr@yahoo.com). And if you are actually wantin to try it out for yourself, you should do it with my health coach (She's super knowledgeable and encouraging, and a certified personal trainer, so you can ask her about anything!) Her website is careforyourtemple.com. missktmurr@yahoo.com

My First Weekend!

Ok, so I wanted to record how its going before I actually weigh in on Monday, so I won't be biased one way or the other when I tell how the program has gone so far. Although of course...I AM doing it for the results, not for the medifast food, so Monday I will definitely record how it went!!!

I have tried many diets over the past several years and tried different healthy lifestyles, exercise plans, etc. And when I tried them all, I thought of it as "for the long haul," not just a short time, so on weekends or special occasion or vacation or whenver I felt deserving, I would fudge/splerge/treat myself/etc. Which is necessary to have a healthy relationship with food I think (for the long run)...everything in moderation! However, the first day of my medifast I just realized this "diet" that I'm on now, as of this moment I only plan to do it for 5 weeks, thats only 35 DAYS!!!!! So I have to make EVERY DAY count!!! No room for splurges or getting off track, if I want to get past this set point in my weight, I have to take it seriously!

So, with that said, I have followed the schedule strictly the first 5 days, and this is my first weekend. The week was surpsisingly easy, given the lack of decision making. I just took a handful of Medi packets to work every day (most of them you either mix with hot water: cocoa, oatmeal, soup, or you mix with cold water: shakes, pudding, etc, or a protein bar). It is definitely taking my body some time to adjust, which from what I read and what my health coach has said is right on track. Your body adjusts to the lower calories, and then starts turning to your stored fat for energy. They say the first week can be tough, but once your body adjusts, you'll be an energetic, fat burning machine :) The idea that exercise is NOT suggested is different for me, however I think in the past I have put more effort on the exercise portion of the "diet and exercise" equation, and all trainers say that diet is a much bigger slice of the fitness pie than exercise. And once I adjust I'll ease into moderate exercise (more relaxing than draining stuff! which I'm excited about!).

Anywho, the food has been absolutely fine to me without any added seasonings and sweetener (I really enjoy drinking my hot cocoa), but I'm pretty used to "diety" kind of foods (the protein shakes taste like protein shakes..but pretty good ones!). My health coach has all kinds of suggestions for spicing up soups and adding cinammon and truvia to the pudding, coffee to the mocha shakes, etc.

RECAP: First week has been good, def an adjustment, love the non decision making. Food is pretty good. Have felt sleepy during the day more and have been dizzy a couple times when I stood up, and have had a headache. All things they tell you is going to happen in the first week, and none were too extreme, also I could have had a few extra snacks that I didn't. Not sure if the side effects were worth it yet bc I have no results...I'll tell you Monday morining!!!!!

Day 1!!!!

I am doing 5 weeks of Medifast, and today is day one! I am really excited to see how it goes, and plan to blog about my experience (1. so that friends, family, and anyone who wants to lose some pounds and/or has considered Medifast will know what its like from someone they trust, and 2. to keep me accountable!!!)

I'm not sure exactly how Medifast officially describes themself, but to me its an extreme diet progam that will take all the thinking and preparing out of healthy eating and help me build healthy habits like eating smaller portions, and not freaking out and binge eating after having one brownie! They send you your food, kinda like Nutri System, except its not weird tv dinner style meals, it's shakes, and bars, and puddings, hot cocoa, etc...easy things you can take with you and eat anywhere (I'm really excited about that part!). It is a very reduced calorie program, and they do not advocate heavy excercise while you are doing phase one. It is not something you should do for life either I don't think, BUT sometimes it takes a spurt of something extreme to get you past a hump in the road!

I'm doing it because I just started my full time job, and the real world is just plain exhausting! I have been too tired the last few weeks to go to the gym in the evening, and when I get home I feel like I have worked very hard and deserve to watch tv and eat whatever I want (plus, getting a hot and ready on the way home is just so easy!). I am quickly realizing why so much of the population has such a difficult time maintaining a healthy weight. Yes, I do work hard during the day, but unfortunately, my office job does not burn more than a handful of calories, so vegging on the couch and eating pizza as my reward could become dangerous fast! SO, I think Medifast will be a great program to keep me healthy, and help me drop a few pounds to keep me motivated, while I adjust to my new lifestyle.

I am extremely pumped right now!!!...but I have yet to complete even 1 full day, so I'll let you know how it goes! (so far I've had peach oatmeal and a swiss mocha shake and they were pretty good!)
